Forts and Secret Hideouts
Every child builds forts. They create their own space, separate from what the world has made for them. They problem-solve as they construct from what’s available. They craft a place of comfort, a retreat of solitude or an area to connect with those they invite to join.
When I bought my loft it felt like a giant fort to me. It was the first time in my life that I had a space that was truly mine. Within it, I wanted a remote space, like those I escaped to as child. I took advantage of the tall ceilings and built up an area above a closet, and added a ladder.
I used it as a place to pause and reset. The act of climbing a ladder and sitting near the ceiling by myself sounds silly. But sometimes a silly, child-like activity is the exact interruption I need in my day.
