The Smokestack Oil Diffuser

The global chaos of 2020 brought many serious problems to all of our lives.

But being stuck indoors for long periods of time also brought many petty problems.  My petty problem was that Nature’s Wick discontinued its “Bonfire Nights” candle, and I needed to find a replacement scent for my home.

They released the new “Evening Bonfire” but it wasn’t the same.  I tried everything I could find.  Anything that sounded like “Tobacco Bark” or “Leather and Mahogany” was purchased and tested, but still no suitable replacement was found.

I knew I had to make the switch to an oil diffuser, which would allow me the freedom to craft my own scent.  But this brought a new petty problem: I couldn’t find a diffuser that fit the aesthetic of my home.

Industrial smokestacks on a city skyline are typically considered an eyesore, but this turned out to be the perfect inspiration to fit the industrial aesthetic I love.  I bought a small, cylindrical oil diffuser and used a wood trivet (that I already had) as a base.  I used some spare cabinet pulls to add some material contrast.   I designed and 3D-printed a simple adapter that would connect to the base, hold the diffuser, and allow a metal cylinder to be placed around it.

I still have not found a direct replacement for “Bonfire Nights”, but some combination of tobacco, vanilla, sandalwood, and mint in the diffuser creates a pleasant and inviting scent.  And the smokestack oil diffuser fits in perfectly in its industrial environment.
